Multicultural Beauty Tips and Tricks - Playing With Color

Light Skin Tones:

Soft eyeshadow shades of mauve, plum and browns flatter eye colors like blue, green and hazel. Shades of browns and champagne create an understated but classic look. Cheeks should be soft and have the same undertone as eyeshadows. Lips should also be worn soft with a swipe of gloss to add light reflection.

Asian Skin Tones:

Start with a soft eyeshadow base color and then add a rich brown, navy, plum, or black color for liner. If you like to use a third color, stick with soft taupe to accentuate the eye and create a crease. Play with lashes by creating the appearance of larger almond shaped eyes by applying strip lashes across the top lash line. Blush should also be worn in soft shades such as a pale pink or peach to brighten up the face. Lips should stay in the cooler tones.

South Asian/Middle Eastern Skin Tones:

Eyeshadow colors should be rich in tone. Deep Gold, Bronze, Terracotta, Plum, Brown, Black and Navy, Silver, Turquoise, Olive and Forest Green are all great colors. Stay away from colors that are too light and will look ashy or stark. If you want a more natural look and want to wear lighter colors opt for warm undertones like peach and red-based browns. Blush should be bright pinks or peaches applied on the apple of the cheek. Use bronzer to create cheekbones. Cooler tones in lip colors tend to flatter the skin.

Mixed Medium Skin Tones:

Eyeshadows can be cool or warm depending on your skins undertone. If you have warm undertones then cool shades will look more dramatic like lavender, silver, charcoal, cool browns. If you have cool undertones, then warm shades will look more dramatic like rich plums, bronze, gold, deep blue. Shimmery pale shadows make for a good base shade. Then follow with a corresponding shade in a darker hue through the crease and finish with a matching dark color in the corner of the eye. Have fun with liner colors to add drama and even play with colored mascara like deep navy or plum. Cheeks should be soft if eyes are more dramatic.

Mature/Dry Skins:

Avoid eyeshadows that are high in frost as they tend to accentuate lines. Satin finish shadows are not as dull as a matte shadow and give a nice light reflection to the eye. Colors such as charcoals, taupe, plums and peaches open up the eye. Blush should be a little bit brighter to lift the face and lips should have enough color as to not wash you out. Opt for cream blush and hydrating lipsticks.
